Should I Own a Gun?

Maybe.  You expected us to say “YES!” didn’t you?  Owning a firearm has a number of positives.  That said, having a gun is not for everyone.  We will try to give you an initial guide to the reasons you might want to become a gun owner, and some important reasons you might not.

Reasons You Should Own a Gun!

Target shooting and tactical training are very enjoyable hobbies.

  • Shooting combines the mind and body.  It requires focus and attention.  It works your hand eye coordination.  It rewards practice, experimentation, and critical analysis.
  • Shooting can be anything from physical and instinctual, like short range point and shoot drills, to very mental and methodical, like precision long range shooting.
  • Shooting with friends or family is a great social activity where you have fun and learn from each other.  You may even decide to get into competitive shooting, which is a whole world of new friends and adventures.

Having the tools and developing the skills to keep yourself and your family safe in case of emergencies is not only a good idea, but brings with it a strong sense of confidence and calm instead of anxiety and worry.  Hopefully you’ll never need to use a firearm in a self defense or tactical situation, but the world can be a dangerous place, and having the ability to protect your family is an extremely valuable skill.  It’s a priceless insurance policy.  To be fair, self defense is only part of that.  We strongly recommend building a wide range of skills to handle emergencies, everything from first aid to survival and orienteering.

A high quality firearm will not only be there for you in an emergency, but should also provide hours of enjoying at the range (or in your back field). When properly maintained a good gun will last longer than you will, and many end up as family heirlooms.  There are few things in life that display high quality design and machining like a high end firearm.  Its difficult to describe feeling a well oiled machine, with exacting tolerances, performing perfectly.

Reasons you might not want to own a gun?

Well first and foremost, you need to be aware of the laws in your town and state.  Many states have different laws regarding firearms ownership.  Lately, more and more towns and cities have their own laws.  And of course, there are federal laws which must be understood.  There are many online resources such as https://www.gunstocarry.com/gun-laws-state/ or https://www.nracarryguard.com/resources/gun-laws-by-state/.  In addition to performing your own research, we strongly recommend you speak with your local police department or county sheriff’s office to get any questions answered.   They are almost always happy to help and support law abiding citizens in firearms ownership.

Are you emotionally reactive?  Do you have a temper?  Do you have suicidal thoughts?  These type of questions can be tough to ask yourself, but before you buy a firearm it is important to try to ensure that you having access to a deadly weapon INCREASES safety for you, your loved ones, and those around you.  Likewise if anyone in your household may be a risk, its your responsibility to ensure they do not have access to your firearms.  We recommend biometric gun safes for the perfect balance between securing the weapon away from other people, and still having immediate access to it yourself in an emergency.
